Juneau Alpine Club meeting minutes

February 3, 2010 meeting

JAC’s annual organizational meeting to elect its officers for the new year was held at the Downtown Bullwinkles Restaurant.  Attending club members included Tamara, Greg, Ron, Carl, Drew, Tim M., Cliff, Don, and Matt.  Fueled by scrumptious pizzas and beer, club members voted for club officers as follows:  Tamara was elected President, in recognition of her organizational skills and enthusiasm (she had been interim President for several months when Steve P left; Carl was elected Vice-President; Bob was re-elected Treasurer, perhaps on an interim basis (he anticipates being gone most of the summer), and Ron was re-elected Secretary.

Club members discussed whether to re-up the requirement that hikers sign a waiver sheet prior to starting a hike.  More on that later.

OLD BUSINESS

Recent Events/Hikes

Katt and her family hiked into the Eagle Glacier cabin January 16-18.  More JAC members could have availed themselves of the cabin, but rainy conditions dampened their enthusiasm.

A rock dump practice session was held January 21.  Carl, Matt, Jan, and Tamara participated

Clear weather supported a day hike into the John Muir cabin on January 23.  Ron, Gary, Gene, Diane, and Kim enjoyed this fairly easy hike.  Ice cleats or crampons were necessary, because the lower trail was covered with slick ice from about 100 yards above the parking lot to the ridge.  The snow covered trail was walk-able without snowshoes from the top of the ridge to the cabin.

Taking advantage of continuing good weather, eight individuals climbed Mt. McGinnis on January 24, following the “winter route.”  The group reported some soft snow just above tree line, which required snow shoes.  The snow was hard and firm at higher elevations, and crampons were necessary.  The wind was quite brisk near the summit. Tamara, Greg, Tim A., Don, Matt, Burt, Steve L., and Carl participated on this winter climb, which required about 9 hours round trip.
