December 8, 2011 meeting
The Juneau Alpine Club held its monthly planning meeting on December 8, 2011, at the Valley Library. Carl, Ron, and Bob attended this meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
Recent Events/Hikes
Early winter slowed JAC activities during late November and early December. Eaglecrest opened November 25, a whole week earlier than its December 3 scheduled opening date. Some JAC members enjoyed the prodigious snow fall at Eaglecrest and other popular areas.
November 14 – Carl and Pete teamed up for a rock climbing practice session at the Rock Dump Climbing facility.
Now, for something completely different…
Bob Sylvester spent 28 days (November 9 – December 5) rafting on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Sixteen wild and crazy folks, including ten from Alaska, took part. November was a perfect month to go, few other groups and great weather! This was a non-commercial trip, organized by experienced Canyon river runners. It was 28 days of AWESOME!!
Cost (Flagstaff to Flagstaff) worked out to about $1,300-1,500 each. Pro Outfitters of Flagstaff supplied rides, equipment, food, and knowledge, they worked out really well.. Daily temperatures were 30- 40 (night) to 60-70 F (day)in the sun (lots of sun!) Side canyons were in the 80’s in the sun.
No one missed computers and/or cell phones, contact with the world was possible from Phantom Ranch for a few hours during one day about a third of the way through the trip. At Phantom Ranch post cards were sent by mules and telephones used land lines just like in the old days.
Bob and Carl both are on the list for Grand Canyon river permits and would be up for organizing a trip next fall(??). Please contact Bob (hikeak@yahoo.com if interested. (I have a list of interested folks somewhere but please remind me- Bob)
Experienced oarsmen are needed but no experience is needed to go, just lots of enthusiasm. Length of trip is somewhat negotiable.
NEW BUSINESS

December 12 – Carl will lead a rock climbing practice session at the Rock Dump Climbing facility. Contact Carl (723-9323) for details.
January 7, 2012 – Bob will lead a moon light hike up Eaglecrest to the Eagle’s nest. Contact Bob for details (206-387-5840).

The next meeting will be held 6:30-8 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Pizzaria Roma. JAC officers will be elected for the 2012 calendar year after fine dining on pizzas and drinks.
